The Odeon area in the 6th arrondissement in Paris

Looking for some peace and quiet

Odeon is well-known for its theatre, its university of medicine, the Carré Saint Germain art galleries, the Rue Saint Andre Des Arts… in the warmer weather it can get so busy that walking through the streets becomes difficult, and yet there are still some quiet areas to be discovered in this part of town…

We would suggest starting from the end of the Rue des Grands Augustins nearest the Seine. You can’t miss the Laperouse restaurant frontage.

Not far from the house where Picasso painted his tragic tableau Guernica, you will see the plaque commemorating where Louis XIII was declared king after the death of his father Henri IV.

You’ll cross the quiet Rue de Savoie and its art galleries, and here you can stop and buy some tea in the very smart Mariage Frères boutique. Rue Christine will take you towards Rue Mazarine, with more art and above all the Kamel Mennour gallery (some good exhibitions here), plus the http://www.alcazar.fr/Home/index.php bar and restaurant, worth stopping off at sometime for an aperitif… We however prefer to continue on to the Rue Saint André des Arts, stopping at the Herboristerie d’Hippocrate at number 42. This shop and its plant-based infusions and remedies seems transported from another time, and you will almost certainly find something that will help your little health problems… as long as you believe it works. After all, our grandmothers did, didn’t they?

Next, we leave the Rue Saint André des Arts and take the little streets (rue de l’eperon and rue du jardinet) leading to the Cours de Rohan, and there… well, let the photos do the talking.

This leafy enclave from a bygone era takes us towards the cour du commerce Saint Andre where you will find the Maison de la Catalogne cultural centre, and of course the famous restaurant Le Procope, one of Paris’ most ancient.

For lunch though, we thinkg you should try the Relais Odéon, with its incredible décor, charming “old-style” waiters and its perfectly decent menu… But we’ll tell you more in the near future…

Restaurants to try in this area:
Le Relais Odéon
Le Christine
Les Bouquinistes (Guy Savoy)
Le Lapérouse
Le Relais Louis XIII
L’Ecluse
L’Alcazar
Le Procope
