La Fête de l’Arbre – celebrating the trees of Paris – 29th/30th March 2008

In a compact city like Paris, parks and gardens tend to be smaller than in some cities, but we like to make the most of them and each year the city celebrates the wonderful trees that help Paris breathe.

This isn’t just an eco-trend; each year Paris is proud and grateful for the visionaries that planted so many trees, populating our woods and streets and helping Paris to be green and leafy. The city is constantly trying to increase the number and diversity of trees on offer.

A few figures:

– We have 36,500 trees in our gardens
– There are 34,000 tress in the cemeteries
– There are another 9,000 in the schools and their sports establishments
– The streets contain 97,500 trees, and this figure is constantly rising
– 8,000 trees line the périphérique (ring road)

The Fête de l’Arbre will be taking place at several different sites around the city, with demonstrations of how trees are trimmed on the boulevard Saint Germain and boulevard de Magenta, a guided walk starting from métro Raspail to explain the diversity of trees in the area, and a plethora of activites in the Parc de Bercy, with talks, presentations, displays, workshops, etc. More events are happening in the city’s two huge woods, the Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes. Check out all the details here (you’ll need basic French).

You’ll also be able to contribute to the “1 Parisian 1 Tree” project that we’ve mentioned before

By the way, I don’t what you think, but we reckon the official poster for the even is a real eyesore… 🙂
