4 new exhibitions at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie for November 2008

Photography

Even with photo month and the photo month – off - festivals running at the moment, the MEP is really very active this month…

You wait ages for a new exhibition, and then four come along all at the same time… ;-) Here’ what the Maison Européenne de la Photographie has on offer in November 2008:

McDermott and Peter McGough: « An experience of amusing chemistry »

David McDermott and Peter McGough made a name for themselves with their particular way of fusing art and everyday life. Whilst there artistic approach is based on the appropriation of images and objects from the end of the 19th Century, they also show themselves as veritable dandies. Just as in their lives, their work show a blunt refusal of all things modern: this obsession for the past is evident in the choice of subjects and styles that they choose to bring back to life. Their work constitutes a contemporary artistic peformance, and the exhibition shows the entire collection of their photographic work from the last two decades.

Sabine Weiss: « Photographer of light and tenderness »

Sabine Weiss has been walking around with her camera, photogrpahing others with tenderness and an incurable curiosity, for the last 45 years. Member of the Rapho agency since 1953, she is known for her ‘humanist’ style that documented the 50s & 60s and has shot numerous fashion pieces for Vogue as well as portraits of celebrities and ar

Concurrently with her paid commissions, she has always taken for for ‘herself’. A time went on, she concentrated on solely black and white shots which allowed her to express what she saw on her travels with « more calm and simplicity », documenting man and his surroundings, and a fullness of light that obsesses her.

Göksin Sipahioglu: Monsieur Sipa, photographer »

Born in Izmir in 1926, Göksin Sipahioglu’s desire to be a journalist goes back to his childhood when, at the age of 12, he we already doing research into the undergound tunnels of Istanbul. His way of analysing events and projecting himself into the future in order to imagine the consequences, led him to found a political newpaper that he collaborated on until becoming manager. An eminent photographer, he was the first to enter communist Albania, to stay in Cuba during the missile crisis, to be become a great reporter at Hürriyet, the biggest Turkish newspaper. In Paris, he reported the events of May 1968 and decided to found the Sipa agency with Phyllis Springer. The exhibition pays honour to him by showing his sense of fraimng, his empathy and his humanity, but also his knack for choosing subjects that have gone on to make History, his way of always remaining alert.

Mutations II / « Moving Stills » (photo en tête de cet article)

As part of the Mois Européen de la Photographie, the exhibition shows a selection of videos made by Europeanartists. Nowadays, many photographers use video, expanding the specificities that define the two media. As well as the diverse selection of artistic approaches and visual techniques used, they offer a way for us to break territorial logic in order to explore the frontiers that separate them.

Includes work by de Peter Aerschmann, Gast Bouschet & Nadine Hilbert, Christoph Brech, Olga Chernysheva, Ori Gersht, Tuomo Rainio (Lauréat du Prix Alcatel-Lucent du Mois Européen de la Photo) by Jutta Strohmaier.
