I don’t know why, I was pretty sure that Chinese new year came not long after… French new year. But I was wrong; usually happening around the end of January, in 2010 Chines new year is celebrated on 14th February: you’ll be able to adorn your valentines with a metal tiger (虎), this year’s animal from the Chinese calendar. Apparently he is energetic, adventurous, independent, inventive, generous, tireless and impulsive… much like us!

As always, Franco-Chinese site www.chine-informations.com has the best lowdown on what will be happening in Paris around the 14th. First of all, they agree with our view that even if the dragon parade in the Chinese quarter (13th arrondissement) will draw the biggest crowds on Sunday 21st February (date may be modified),  it’s the parade in the 3rd arrondissement on Saturday 20th February (date also subject to change) that will be the connoisseurs’ choice; just as spectacular, with lion dances, traditional costumes and more dragons than you can shake a metal tiger at.

The parade starts at 2pm on Sunday 14th February at place de l’Hôtel de Ville, and here’s the route:

For more info (in French) about the humungous parade in the 13th arrondissement on the Sunday, check out this page. We’ve been numerous times, but it’s become such a huge event that you’ll have difficulty seeing much at all.

And there’s a lot more going on for Chinese New Year 2010 in Paris besides::

- A Chinese New Year exhibition at the Centre Culturel de Chine from 5th – 27th February 2010
- A new stamp to celebrate the year of the tiger (56 cents)
- Gold and silver bullion with TIgger on it! (but you may have to go to Beijing to get them),

etc. etc.

To check out the latest info (in French, sorry), check out www.chine-informations.com. They seem to have all the details (and there are quite a lot). Check them out!
