Josep Maria Sert, the Titan at work (1874-1945)
at the Petit Palais from 8th March – 5th August 2012
It was only when looking through the details of the new exhibition of Josep Maria Sert‘s work at the Petit Palais that we realised we’d already seen some of his monumental fresques in Paris – his work covers an entire room at the musée Carnavalet (and very impressive it is too).
The story of this Barcelona-born artist’s life is definitely worth finding out more about. For example, you may not know that his work also adorns the Rockefeller Center in New York! Read on…
The Petit Palais often has some surprisingly good exhibition with painters that deserve to be better known, and this new exhibition about Josep Maria Sert is no exception.
Specialising in huge fresques, his name isn’t that well known, and yet in his time he was commissioned for work in prestigious buildings in New York, Barcelona, Geneva… and Paris, where his red and silver brushwork is all over a giant room – including the ceiling – that is now part of the Carnavalet museum.

We’ll have a proper report/visit of that museum for you next month
But back to Josep Maria Sert. The exhibition at the Petit Palais looks like it will be particularly spectacular, with 120 works on show and some pieces as long as ten metres!
As well as his work, drawings and photographs, you’ll be able to learn about the artist’s life, including some controversial political choices and – wait for it – his marriage with a princess! Not to be missed.
