Our friend Yury Toroptsov, who has a a series of photos on show permanently upstairs at the Hôtel Design Sorbonne has a new project at the quirky Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature (a place we love).

Deleted Scene explores the links between hunting and photography by photographing… the invisible. Actually, the full story is a lot more mysterious still…

Get ready for a very particular project in a very particular place…

Photographer Yury Toroptsov went back to his native Russia to photograph the remaining souvenirs of his father, a photographer also, who died before Yury was 2. There’s a photo taken and developed by his father with baby Yury looking directly at him. Yury of course has no memory of this, but he continues to get stories (both true and apocryphal) of his father told to him by the locals.

The story takes a different turn when Yury learns how Akira Kurosawa arrived in his village in 1974. The Japanese director was making a film about the life of the hunter Dersu Uzala, and the family saw a small part of the filming.

A filmmaker, a hunter, an image seeker, an image with a baby looking directly at a father he will never remember… Stories intertwine and absence is everywhere.

A book of the series will shortly be published by Kehrer (96 pages, 52 illustrations, 30€ here at amazon.fr) but you can see it first in Paris!
