Four photographers show Brazil in the 1940s – with profound change sweeping through the country, the modernism of Niemeyer looming and the Second World War rumbling in the distance.

The 40s were a period of incredible change in Brazil, with the dizzying arrival of modernism, a move away from the previous slave-orientated economy and a constant to-and-fro between democracy and authoritarianism.

Amidst this maelstrom of events and ideas, the very notion of what modernism meant was yet to be decided, with many question regarding morals, habits, democracy and fascism.

And during this time, with a multitude of possible subjects at hand, Brazilian photography was finding its voice.

Four important names in photography – Marcel Gautherot (1910-1996), José Medeiros (1921- 1990), Thomaz Farkas (1924-2011) and Hans Gunter Flieg (1923) – are on show at the exhibition, four different points of view and a wide variety of styles and subject.

Also, the exhibition space next to Invalides (so not far from our hotels) is new to us – it’s a foundation set up by a rich Armenian financier who died in 1955. Great photos and a new space to discover – we are so there!
