Carambolages exhibition at the Grand Palais
2nd March – 4th July 2016

The Grand Palais has a different kind of exhibition it wants you to try – Carambolages (the French word for a cannon shot in pool) brings together a weird and wonderful collection of works and arranges them in sequence so that each exhibit depends on the previous one and announces the next.

Intriguing! Here’s all the info.

Chronologically, by school of painting… There are a number of classic ways of ordering and presenting an exhibition, but Carambolages wants to try and break down the barriers between different styles and forms of expression, mixing old and new and the kitchen sink in an attempt to attract a new kind of visitor and provoke a new approach to art.

It’s not just the layout that’s out of the ordinary – some of the works on display are pretty weird too, like the painting done by a donkey or the miniature shell snuffbox with an eye looking out at you.

The whole thing is the work of Jean-Hubert Martin, kind of oddball in the world of art, as you might have guessed…

To accompany the exhibition, there’s an online (and odd) game of dominoes to play, a free app to download or guided visits that you’ll probably remember for a while to come.

The exhibition catalogue is also available in English (50€).

Open every day except Tuesdays from 10am-8pm. Closed 1st May
