Primitive Picasso exhibition
at the Quai Branly Museum
until 23rd July 2017

This new exhibition at the Quai Branly Museum, close to our hotels, analyses the influence of non-Western art on the master’s work, an influence that he refused to recognise.

Here’s all the info.

Undeniably, Picasso had a curiosity and admiration for “negro art”. There was much of it in his personal collection and to be found in his workshops. It seems improbable that none if its influences had an effect on his work, despite his refusal to admit it.

The exhibition is divided into two parts. The first has a selection of photos, objects, letters and other documents presented chronologically, showing the interest the artist had for works from Oceania, Africa, the Americas and Asia.

The second part is more conceptual, with an anthropological rather than aesthetic approach. Here, you can see how the primitive – for example nudity or the breaking down of the body –  is also found in the art of Picasso.

Related events around the exhibition include a Picasso before party on 21st April from 7pm-midnight (last entry 11pm) with performances, films, street art, DJs and even a bar(!). There’s also a special weekend on 17th & 18th June, and events planned for Museum Night.

Several different guided visits are also on offer, there are workshops for kids, and a catalogue is available (343 pages, 50€ here at amazon.fr).
