The Paris Summer Canal Festival from 8th July – 27th August 2017

It happens every year, but this is their tenth anniversary (congratulations!), so let’s welcome even more warmly than usual L’été du canal, literally the Summer of the Canal.

Forget the Seine that separates the Right Bank from the Left Bank (although it’s great too) – time to explore the Canal de l’Ourq that snakes through the northeast of the city and continues way out into some very interesting suburbs.

Get ready for canal cruises starting at just 1 euro, beaches, evening dances with traditional French music and so much else that’s it’s difficult to know where to start!

Let’s try though – here are all the details you need.

The city is great when you manage to escape the heat and bustle, so L’été du canal is especially welcome, and a perfect way to get a change of scene on the smallest of budgets.

The fun starts at the bassin de la Villette (here).

First of all, for the first time ever, you’ll be able to swim (for free!) in the canal, in specially created pools with lifeguards in attendance.

There’s also something new happening in the line-up of cruises on offer. On the weekend, there’s a cruise called ‘de l’assiette à l’écran’ (from plate to screen), where you can eat your fill on a boat and get dropped off at la Villette just in time to catch one of the free films showing in their open air film festival!

You can also have brunch on a boat (or a number of other places, like the balcony of the National Centre for Dance, a bridge over the park, or a specially created space just by the Canal offering vegetarian food…) and there are other gastronomic cruises available too, a festive cruise based on the idea of avoiding waste (all food served comes from unsold produce at Rungis wholesale market…

L'été du canal du 8 juillet au 27 août 2017And there are even more cruises available – musical cruises with a DJ, street art cruises, a long cruise out to a park called la Poudrerie, and a day-long cruise during which, at one point, the canal boat will be pulled by a horse…

You can also attend one of the famous bals populaires, there are concerts at a specially made ‘pleasure port’ (which also has an awful lot of other things going on), special guided walks, barges with exhibitions and shows… Wow!
