Dada Africa exhibition at the Orangerie Museum until 19th February 2018

This new exhibition at the Orangerie Museum explores an interesting subject – the link between the subversive dadaist movement and non-western cultures – by confronting African, American Indian and Asian works with those of dadaists such as Hanna Höch, Man Ray…

Here’s all the info.

It’s interesting to see how rejecting one thing can lead to the acceptance of another. By turning their back on the traditional values of art, the dadaists looked for inspiration in art from elsewhere, often primitive art, a ‘pure’ art.

The exhibition shows a variety of different forms of expression, with paintings, sculptures, photos and photo-collages, and the events organised around the exhibition seem particularly enticing:

– Guided visits, some in sign language
– A number of  conferences
– A study day entitled Dada. Hybridisation and Non-Western Sources on 23rd January from 10am-6pm
– Two lunchtime concerts at 12.30pm on Tuesdays 14th & 21st November 2017
– A hip hop show called Zoom Dada in the Nymphéas room on 5th December à 19h
– A show called Dada Paradis on 8th & 15th December and 12th & 19th January, at 7pm & 8.30pm, which will move through the exhibition
Exposition Dada Africa au Musée de l'Orangerie jusqu'au 19 février 2018But wait, there’s more:

– A Dada night for 18-30 year-olds on 27th January 2018 from 6.30-10.30pm, an immersion in the period from 1916-1920 with screenings and documentaries, a film-concert, a workshop and a performance
– Workshops for adults and families
– The documentary Viva Dada (52′) is being shown every day in the Museum’s auditorium at 11am, 1.45pm and 4.30pm

A catalogue of the exhibition is also disponible (224 pages, 150 illustrations, 32€ here at amazon.fr).
