César retrospective at the Pompidou Centre until 26th March 2018

Twenty years after his death, the Pompidou Centre pays homage to the prolific artist César, known for his compressed sculptures and giant thumbs!

Here’s all the info.

Born in Marseille in 1921, César arrived in Paris in the 1940s and rubbed shoulders with Giacometti and Picasso (often in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the area near our hotels).

Over more than 50 years of creation, he became one of the most important sculptors of his time, and yet parts of his work are still little-known to most people.

This retrospective is an unprecedented venture, filling eight of the biggest rooms at the Pompidou Centre with 126 pieces presented in such a way as to give a generous amount of room to admire even the largest ones.

French-speakers still have a few days (until 11th January 2018) to enjoy a new documentary about the artist for free below, after which it’s available to buy on DVD or rent.

And the Pompidou Centre is dabbling with Soundcloud too, putting extra resources about their exhibitions on their page, in English! (you can check out a short audio piece below too).

And as usual, the museum isn’t afraid to fill its gift shop with products supposedly related to César, like the César mug, the César tote bag and the César smartphone case. Because reasons.

A catalogue of the exhibition is also available (256 pages, 300 illustrations, 40€ here at amazon.fr).
The César retrospective is at the Pompidou Centre (here) until 26th March 2018

Open every day except Tuesdays from 11am-9pm
