Mary Cassatt,
an American impressionist in Paris

at the Jacquemart-André Museum
9th March – 23rd July 2018

Le Musée Jacquemart-André tells us that during her lifetime, Mary Cassatt was considered the greatest American painter. Perhaps it’s because she spent over 60 years of her life in France! 😛

Whatever the reason, she is surely the only female American impressionist painter, as this retrospective will show, with over fifty of her great paintings.

Here’s all the info.

Mary Cassatt (1844–1926) caught the attention of Degas at the 1874 art salon thanks to her talent and uniquely Franco-American approach.

The daughter of a banker, she spent a few years in France when she was young, and returned years later after studying art in Pennsylvania, settling down (definitively) in Paris.

Cassatt excelled in the art of portraiture, but with an experimental touch, showing the familiar traits of both impressionism and post-impressionism.

– Daily impressions (1880-1888)
– Mother and child – the modernisation of a theme (1888 – 1900)
– Experimentations – Mary Cassatt’s creative process (années 1890)
– Modernity (1892 – 1915)
