Caravaggio’s Roman Period at the Jacquemart-André Museum, 21st September 2018 – 28th January 2019

The Jacquemart-André Museum has a new Caravaggio exhibition on offer, including seven of the painter’s masterpieces that have never been shown in France before!

An emblematic figure of 17th century European painting, Caravaggio revolutionised Italian painting with his innovative use of chiaroscuro.

This new exhibition explores his career in Rome and the artistic world in which he was based, ending with the tragic brawl of 1606, during which Caravaggio killed Ranuccio Tomassoni and was sentenced to death, forcing him to flee Rome (and he would never see the city again).

Out of the ten paintings lents by some of he most prestigious museums in Italy (as well as one Russian one), seven have never been displayed in France before, allowing us a unique chance to see – for exmaple – the two versions of the penitent Magdalene side by side for the first time.
