Renoir Father and Son exhibition at the Musée d’Orsay until 27th January 2019

The father was a great painter, the son a magnificent cinematographer… The fruitful and sometimes paradoxical dialogue between Renoir senior (Pierre-Auguste) and junior (Jean) is the subject of this new exhibition at the Musée d’Orsay, not far from our hotels!

Talk about a creative family. There are many similitudes between the 19th century painter and the 20th century filmmaker. This new exhibition shows the common ground in the work of both men – a painter of masterpieces and what many believe to be the best French director of all time.

You’ll also learn how Jean managed to forge his own reputation and no longer be thought of as ‘the son of…’, while also cultivating the myth around his father’s name and work.

Richly illustrated with paintings and film extracts, the exhibition also includes costumes, photos, posters, documents and drawings, some of which have never been seen in France before. Together, they explore themes common to both Renoirs, such as the role of women, ‘spontaneous’ scenes that were actually meticulously staged, and favourite places like Montmartre and the Seine.

Around the exhibition there are guided visits for adults or families, workshops for kids, a showing of French Cancan in the presence of French actor Mathieu Almaric (who will no doubt talk a little before or after), a conference Au nom du père. Renoir en héritage on 17th January 2019 (book here), and a ‘curieuse nocturne‘ on 24th January 2019 (aimed at under-26 year olds) with special events and even a bar!

A catalogue of the exhibition is also available (312 pages, 42€, here at amazon.fr).
