Southern Geometries exhibition at the Cartier Foundation, 14th October 2018 – 24th February 2019

This new collective exhibition at the Cartier Foundation, a few minutes away from our hotels, shows the richness of Latin-American art with 70 artists and 250 exhibits from 13 different countries…

When the Cartier Foundation goes big, it goes really big. Their new exhibition Southern Geometries, from Mexico to Patagonia covers a vast period (pre-Colombian to the present day) in order to explore geometric abstraction in Latin American art, as well as its sources.

A huge installation by Solano Benítez & Gloria Cabral (winners of the Golden Lion at the 2016 Venice Biennale), based on the principle of repetition, fills part of the main ground floor room.

In different media, Venezuelan artist Gego is represented by 22 delicate sculptures, there are photos of Machu Picchu by Martín Chambi dating from the 1920s, almost abstract paintings by Brazilian artist Alfredo Volpi, the bright paintings of Luiz Zerbini…

All use geometric abstraction to a certain extent and show a strong, shared link with the past.

The Foundation documented the preparation of the exhibition in a series of videos that you can watch below (turn on the subtitles if you need a little help understanding).

Around the exhibition the Foundation is organising a number of evening events, some called Les Soirées Nomades (with performances by different artists), and others Les Nuits de l’Incertitude (with artists, intellectuals and scientists talking with each other in front of an audience).

There are lots of workshops for kids too, ranging from pretty serious (Geometric embroidery) to rather fun (Make your own poncho!).

A catalogue of the exhibition is also available (336 pages, 400 illustrations, 50€ here at amazon.fr).
