Liv Schulman – Le Goubernement at the Villa Vassilieff, 17th May – 20th July 2019

The second part of an exhibition paying homage to Maria Vassilieff, Le Goubernement by Liv Schulman (super close to our hotels) is a new series of films, a fiction in six episodes showing the destiny and art of female, lesbian, transgender and non-binary women who lived in Paris between 1910 and 1980.

An Argentinian living and working in Paris, Liv Schulman created Le Goubernement to show how, for 70 years, certain women went almost unnoticed, or at least did not receive the recognition they should have done.

While the name of Marie Vassilieff is known to some, who knows the name, influence or destiny of Esther Carp, Suzanne Malhberbe, Pan Yuliang or Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven ?

Schulman makes the most of the whole of the Villa’s exhibition space for her films, utilising the format of fiction to tell real stories and anecdotes taken from the actual lives of her heroines (all 45 of them!)

With a deliberately experimental narrative structure, characters are sometimes played by several different actresses, while sometimes one actress plays several roles at the same time.

Looks like a high-brow but rewarding and fascinating experience!

1. Claude Cahun (1894 – 1954) 2. • With the project Le Goubernement, exhibited at @villavassilieff the artist @liv.schulman proposes a new feminist history of art. At this occasion we are happy to share with you the stories and fate of women, lesbian, queer, trans and non-binary artists who lived in Paris between 1900 and 1980 and who have been erased from the great modernist narrative of the 20th century. • ?
