As well as being a successful clothes designer, agnès b. has been supporting a wide variety of arts for quite a while now, with a gallery in the centre of Paris, as well as supporting independent films and DVD releases.
Now she’s opened her own arts space as a permanent home for her Foundation – La Fab. – dedicated to contemporary art, with a selection taken from her personal collection (of nearly 5,000 pieces!) and temporary exhibitions.
Oh, and it’s not far from our hotels!
Agnès b. has been collecting art since 1983. Her first piece was a painting by Basquiat, bought from him at his workshop, so it’s rather amusing that the address of her new Foundation is place Jean-Michel Basquiat, in the southeast of Paris.
The space offers:
— 800m² for main presentation (themed exhibitions of photos, drawings, paintings, sculptures, installations and films from agnès’ vast collection),
— 190m² for the new Galerie du Jour, which was formerly on rue Quincampoix near the Pompidou Centre and promises to be ‘eclectic’, and
— a 150m² bookshop, an attraction in itself for the great selection on offer.
The upper floors of the building are reduced-rent housing, and the Foundation will soon start organising collaborations with the occupants, part of its goal to allow access to art for all.
Actually, the Foundation already works with around twenty non-profits and helps to preserve the environment, for example by supporting the Fondation Tara Océan.
Another piece of good news is that to celebrate the opening of La Fab., entrance is free until 8th February 2020 (after that, it will still be a reasonable 7€). Get yourself down there!
