Exposition “Détective”: crime factory?
at the Crime Literature Library
20th January – 1st April 2017

You might not know of the French magazine Détective, but it’s a sort of National Enquirer that focuses just on crimes, and more specifically the sordid details – murders, blood, loose women and lots of gory photos.

This new exhibition “Détective”: crime factory? is at the Crime Literature Library (yes, we have one of those in Paris), a little-known space not far from our hotels, and explores the founding of the publication while examining the clever formula that continues to make it a success.

Here’s all the info.
Exposition "Détective" : fabrique de crimes à la Bibliothèque des littératures policières du 20 janvier au 1er avril 2017What a fascinating subject for a little exhibition!

Détective magazine was a roaring success from the very beginning in the late 1920s / early 1930s (the same period that inspired the interior design of the Hôtel Baume) with an irresistible mix of crime, vices, perversion and above all lurid photos of all the depravity.

However, the magazine was also vilified for its immorality and untrustworthiness, oscillating between careful research and histrionic fabulation.

The exhibition at the Crime Literature Library, just minutes form our hotels, takes a looks at how this success story was constructed with sensationalism, gory photos and intriguing reports. A step back to a time no so much unlike our own then?

A book to accompany the exhibition is also being published by éditions JosephK (24€ here at amazon.fr).
