YES! Our favourite weekend of the year is back – Les Journées du Patrimoine (or Open House Weekend, or European Heritage Weekend, whatever you want to call it), with loads of great places to visit that are generally closed for the rest of the year.

We have a few ideas of particularly exceptional things to see not far from our hotels! Click on through…

OK, let’s talk abut the one huge problem with the Journées du Patrimoine – there’s just too much to do and see! Even if you reduce the list of places to visit to those participating for the first time, or those open specially for the event, it’s difficult to know where to start.

The full programme for Paris is here, but allow us to concentrate our choice on the Left Bank not far from our hotels.
Among the venues taking part for the first time, there’s

– the Pierre et Marie Curie University – Pitié Salpêtrière site which has visits of its ancient library on offer,

– the Mobilier National allows you to visit its ‘classic modernism’ building, a listed monument created by famed architect Auguste Perret,

– the workshop of bookbinders Reliure Houdart will be showing some remarkable examples of beautifully bound book, you can watch them work and hear them explain their techniques,

– The orthodox Notre-Dame-Joie-des-Affligés-et-Sainte-Geneviève church (wow, that’s a mouthful!) will be open to the public for the first time, and

– the Catholic Institute of Paris will allow you to discover its recently restored campus dating from 1875, including the Saint Joseph des Carme chapel, built in the 17th century Italian baroque style.

But perhaps the most exceptional of all the exceptional places that you can visit this weekend are

– the Holy Trinity Cathedral, an new Russian orthodox cathedral in a modern-meets-tradition style, and

– the Chinese Embassy in France, open for the very first time.

We’ll be going to see those two without fault. Photos coming soon!

In addition, the Left Bank has a number of amazing embassies and government ministries, fabulous churches, secret gardens, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts…

In all, over 30 sites await you in the 5th arrondissement (programme here) and a couple of dozen more in the 6th arrondissement (programme here).
