Two new exhibitions at the Guimet Museum
Images of Burma, photographic treasures and
a ‘carte blanche’ by Jayashree Chakravarty

The Guimet Museum continues its series of exhibitions about photography, showing for the first time some exceptional images of Burma (now Myanmar) taken at the end of the 19th century.

On the same day, 18th October, opens the carte blanche from Indian artist Jayashree Chakravarty who has created a nature-based installation in the 4th floor rotunda.

Here’s all the info.

The Guimet Museum’s collection of photos of Burma date from 1989, and was added to between 1992 and 2015. It’s an exclusively European view of the country at the time of the British colonies, with surprising landscapes, wooden monuments now lost forever, dancers, the aristocracy…

In all, over a hundred photos are on show, and a catalogue of the museum’s complete collection on the subject is being published as a (rather expensive) book (320 pages, 192 photos, 65€ here at amazon.fr).

Deux nouvelles expositions au Musée Guimet - Images birmanes, trésors photographiques et carte blanche à Jayashree ChakravartyFor her carte blanche in the museum’s fourth floor rotunda, Jayashree Chakravarty has decided to present a living, organic creation.

Light comes through the different layers of the organic matter used, and the presence of insects reminds us that our/their lives are ephemeral. An almost living piece of art best seen up close.

And if you want to talk to Chakravarty about it, there’s “Special day” with her at the museum on Saturday 9th December 2017, a “privileged opportunity to meet a contemporary artists and better understand her work”.
