French landscapes exhibition at the BNF
24th October 2017 – 4th February 2018

160 contemporary photographers show the countryside of France from 1984-2017 in more than a thousand photos at the BNF, not far from our hotels !

Here’s all the info.

1984 was the year the state financed DATAR (Délégation à l’Aménagement du Territoire et à l’Action Régionale), with 29 photographers being sent off all over France to immortalise the French countryside of the 1980s.

Similar initiatives were to follow – for example, after showing the 80’s by DATAR, the exhibitions presents work by the Observatoire photographique national du Paysage and Conservatoire du littoral form the 1990s, and France(s) Territoire Liquide from the 2010s, amongst others.

Not only are the locations extraordinary (and often banal at the same time), but the approach of each photographer is not at all the same.

The various points of view of such a vast subject (and country) promise to be fascinating, and during your visit four screens will present explanations from the curators, while others allow the photographers themselves to talk about one of their photos.

We are also not a little proud to see that several participants from our photo project PHPA are on the list of photographers taking part in the exhibition – Guillaume Amat (our 2010 prizewinner), Frédéric Delangle (2007 prizewinner), Ambroise Tézenas and Patrick Tournebœuf (the 2010 carte blanche) – next to prestigious names including Raymond Depardon and Robert Doisneau.

Lots of events are being organised around the exhibition, including six conferences and three talks, film showing at midday and guided visits led by the photographers themselves! For Frédéric Delangle, be sure to go down on 14th December 2017.

Six Parisian photo galleries are organising exhibitions linked with the main one at the BNF (including our friends at the Galerie Esther Woerdehoff). More info here.

There’s an online part of the exhibition – really well done – that you can check out here, and if you want to show your own landscape photos, there are two contests you can enter – all the info is here.

And to finish up, the catalogue of the exhibition is available with 304 pages and 270 illustrations for 50€ here at amazon.fr.
