European Heritage Days, 15th & 16th September 2018

This weekend is the 35th edition of the Journées du Patrimoine, or European Heritage Days (or Open House weekend), where loads of unusual Parisian places open specially for two days of events and visits. It’s not to be missed!

There are over 80 venues open near our hotels, and hundreds more all over town. Here are some ideas…

With such a  h u g e  choice of events on offer, we are going to concentrate on what’s happening in our area, what’s open specially for the weekend, and who’s participating for the first time.

One of the first-timers is the Bibliothèque Sainte-Barbe (Sainte-Barbe library), which is offering guided visits on Saturday 15th, every hour from 10am-5pm.

Make sutre you book here, because it looks great!

Also on Saturday 15th, you can visit – for the first time – the Institut National d’Etude du Travail et d’Orientation Professionnelle. Yay! They are celebrating their 90th anniversary this year and have a special exhibition for you, called “90 years of innovation in educational and professional orientation”. Sounds, er, fun.

And the Theatre of Puppetry Arts – Le Mouffetard has a special showing of the documentary “L’Afrique collectionnée” on Saturday 15th at 5pm. The director Christian Lajoumard will be in attendance.

And don’t forget the special opening of la Sorbonne, the town hall of the 5th arrondissement (just seconds from the Hotel les Dames du Panthéon and Hotel des Grands Hommes), the Scots college the Jussieu university campus and more…

Here’s the map of the 75 events on offer in the 5th arrondissement!

In the 6th arrondissement, near the Hotel and Spa la Belle Juliette, things are slightly calmer, with ‘only’ 45 events.

Saint-Ignace church will be open for the first time, with guided visits and an exhibition about the history of the church .

The Académie de la Grande Chaumière (actually and artist’s studio) will open its doors to show you where famous creative types such as Bourdelle, Grasset and Zadkine perfected their craft.

The Société d’Encouragement pour l’Industrie Nationale invites you to go on a guided visit, attend a conference about Carlo Sarrabezolles, who was specialised in sculpting concrete for ornate buildings, and lets you check out its exhibition Innovation et Patrimoine : Les savoir-faire d’exception des Entreprises du Patrimoine.

And there are lots of other places to see!

The Palais de l’Institut de France and The Senate are specially open, as is the Faculté de Pharmacie, with its quirky museum and sweet botanical garden that is impossible to see at any other time of year…

Below is the map of everything on in the 6th arrondissement. Make the most of this weekend!
