Jean-Michel Basquiat and Egon Schiele exhibitions at the Louis Vuitton Foundation until 14th January 2019

The Louis Vuitton Foundation has a double-whamy of big-name exhibitions opening – Egon Schiele and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Schiele is known for his dark expressionist paintings from the ealry 20th century, created during a startling short period (he died of SPanish flu in 1918).

In the exhibition, the first in Paris since 25 years to concentrate exclusively on his work, voer 100 pieces are on show, thanks to to loans from important museums around the world. You’ll see mostly gouache works and drawings, with a few paintings, presented in frou chronological sections in a vast 600m² space:

– the ornamental line (1908-1909)
– the expressive line (1910-1911)
– the combined line (1912-1914), and
– the amputated, fragmented line (1915-1918).

The Basquiat exhibition seems quite expansive too – it’s spread over four levels of the Foundation (2,500m²), with over 120 works made between 1980 and 1988, when the artist died from an overdose of heroin and cocaine.

Close to Warhol, Basquiat’s work is now among the most expensive to buy. Known for his street-art style, his paintings have sold for hundreds of millions of dollars.

One of these incredibly expensive works is actually part of the exhibition, a painting of a skull that was initially bought in 1984 for $19,000 dollars and resold at auction last year for $110 million.

Basquiat’s work is presented not simply chronologically but also by theme. In one room you’ll see three large format heads dating from between 1981 and 1983, there are thirty drawings in the following room, another gallery with paintings in which writing plays a pivotal role, etc.

In all, the Basquiat exhibition fills eight galleries that allow visitors not only to judge the artist’s genius, but also witness his furious and desperate race toward the void.

Linked with the exhibitions is a family weekend with various workshops, ‘micro-visits’ (lasting fifteen minutes), a special game for kids, and more.

A catalogue is also available for each exhibition (45€ here for Basquiat, 35€ here for Schiele).
