It's true that a stay in Paris will be even better if you speak the language a little...

It’s true that a stay in Paris will be even better if you speak the language a little…

The French love it when someone from abroad makes a little effort to speak the language, rather than just grunting and pointing. It’s hard sometimes when you don’t have basic language skills, or you’re just too shy to get the words out. I myself have done my fair share of hopeless stuttering and blushing abroad…

Anyway, a solution may be at hand. And it’s free!

Mango is a new site that has a selection of language courses on offer – including French for English speakers – that you can do on the web at your own rate and when you have the time. There are 100 lessons, broken down into chapters, with help with pronunciation, and amazingly the whole thing is free. You just need to provide your e-mail address.

Like a lot of websites, it’s not clear how Mango is going to make its money (perhaps with ads or additional future services?) and for the moment it’s in beta, but it does look very promising. Try it out, and make your visit to Paris go even better!

Also of note: the new course which starts 26th September. It’s a podcast of short weekly lessons that you can subscribe to via iTunes. The basic lessons are free, but you can also pay for a subscription to additional documentation and top-up lessons.

I’ve used their Spanish course in the past, and it was really clear and well-paced. Click here to subscribe (you’ll need iTunes).

And in case you’re wondering, no we are not affiliated with either of the sites in any way, and don’t get any money for recommending them; we just thought they might come in handy! Bonne chance!

A quick round-up of rugby-related events so you can gauge how mad the city has gone…

I really wanted to avoid talking about the rugby again, but try as one may there’s no avoiding it here at the moment.

So let’s go with a flow a little. Here’s a quick list of some of the stranger rugby-related things going on around town at the moment…

- Saturday 8th September at 6.30pm – a 2 1/2 hour parade/show (that’s, like, even longer than a Harry Potter movie) designed by famed choreographer Philippe Découflé will fill the Stade de France. Over 1,000 locals have been roped in. Poor things.

- A free photo exhibition is being held in the rotunda of metro station Saint Lazare. It lasts for the whole period of the World Cup and shows rugbymen « in action ». The photos were taken on, er, the stage of the Paris opera « giving them a unique and original artistic and symbolic dimension ». Yeah, right.

- You might know that the French rugby team is made up of macho, muscled brutes, but did you know that they also like to get naked? Their 4th nude calendar, Les Dieux du Stade, has just been released with photos by Steven Klein. You can order it here.

- We mentioned the fireworks at La Défense a couple of days ago. Now even the Eiffel tower has been rugbyfied, with green lighting, two white spotlights symbolising the goal posts (or whatever they’re called) and a giant rugby ball suspended in the middle of the structure. Have a look at a great photoset on Flickr here.

Hopefully, that’s the last time I’ll be mentioning rugby on the blog. But, you never know…

Quoique… Il ne faut jamais dire jamais…

It starts in a couple of days (7th September) and lasts almost all month. Paris is positively buzzing: rugby this, rugby that. There’s no escaping the Rugby World Cup.

Above all, it seems to be a great marketing opportunity; there are flags and ads everywhere, bars are showing the matches on big screens, and yesterday I saw a double decker Puma bus going round the city playing loud techno, a crowd of mad youngsters on the top deck blowing whistles!

If you want to buy tickets for matches, check out the official Rugby World Cup site here. There’s a ton of information on there…

Personally I’m not a big rugby fan, so it’s going to be pretty hellish until the end of the month. For rugby fans though, Paris is definitely the place to be…

A few years back it would have taken you nearly three hours to get from Paris to London by train, and about the same to get from Paris to Brussels. However, heavy investment in the railway system has paid off; journey time to Brussels is alreday down to an amazing 85 minutes, and thanks to a new stretch of high-speed line in England (where the train used to be painfully slow), journey time to London will soon be just over 2 hours!

Indeed, the record journey time was broken yesterday, as a Eurostar train made the journey in 2 hours and three minutes!

Source say that even the 2 hour barrier would have been broken, but subsidence in northern France (supposedly due to World War I trenches!) slowed things down.

In any case, Paris is now an even better choice for your base in Europe. A day-trip to London or Brussels is perfectly possible, and fast trains can even get you to Marseilles in just three hours!

This is partly why I love living in Paris; with airport security now long and tiresome, Paris is really handy for getting more or less anywhere by train with the minimum amount of hassle…
