Finalement, c’est avec 2 petites semaines de retard que notre nouvel hôtel va ouvrir, deux semaines qui valent l’attente ! Après plus de 18 mois de travaux, le bâtiment ne ressemble plus à un chantier, et des détails montrent que ça sera bientôt un lieu exceptionnel. La preuve en photos…

Dans ce reportage vous allez voir surtout des détails ; les pièces ne sont pas encore rangées, certains meubles ne sont pas déballés, ne faites pas attention aux ampoules manquantes, à la poussière, les cadres posés… tout ça sera bientôt nettoyé, installé et prêt !

Isabelle Delvallé, la directrice de l’hôtel, a recruté son équipe, et tout le monde se met à préparer le lieu pour votre visite. En préparation aussi est le guide qui vous donnera toutes les astuces pour comprendre l’hôtel, par exemple le lien entre chaque étage et des étapes clefs dans la vie de Juliette Récamier, avec un texte spécialement écrit pour nous par un professeur spécialisé dans la vie de Juliette.

Vous pouvez commencer votre visite en regardant ces photos de l’installation de l’immense fresque conçue pour la cage d’escalier par notre décoratrice Anne Gelbard. Avec ses impressions en métal, sa couleur change avec la lumière (la façade de l’hôtel donne vers le sud), et plus on monte dans les étages, plus les dessins deviennent aériens ! Pour l’instant nous l’avons protégé pour qu’il ne prenne pas de poussière (ou pire) mais vous aurez un meilleure aperçu ici.Les couloirs sont habillés par du papier peint étoilé, de la moquette et des miroirs avec un éclairage discret…Les meubles design et vintage commencent à donner l’esprit de l’hôtel, mélangeant audacieusement l’ancien et le moderne…Il y aura de belles couleurs, des motifs graphiques et des salles de bain salons…Et nous n’avons pas jeté tout ce qui appartenait à l’ancien hôtel. Beaucoup des meubles ont été restaurés et repeints, et les cheminées en marbre ont été soigneusement gardées, restaurées et remises en place.Les salons et le spa prennent forme aussi…Il y a tellement de choses que nous avons à vous montrer ! Well, we’ve been talking about it for a long time, and now – finally! – we’re proud (really proud!) to be able to show you the first photos of the rooms from our new hotel, due to open in October 2010…

Renovation of La Belle Juliette (previously Le Ferrandi) started nearly a year ago in July 2009. It’s a huge project, given that the whole hotel had to be rethought in order to create a spa, salons, a bar and larger rooms throughout. Our designer Anne Gelbard had dreamt up the new design, but could those dreams be brought to life?

It’s the question that all architects and decorators ask themselves, as taking drawings and making them into models before starting the actual building work can often bring with it a selection of surprises.

This is why four pilot rooms have been created, visited, exmained and analysed by the whole team, and we’re happy to announce that the results are SPLENDID!

There will be seven different styles of room altogether. Anne Gelbard gives us the details of how she conceived the different ambiences:

- 1st floor Madame Récamier and Madame de Stael: the greatest of friends, feminine, contemporary, one is straightforward, the other forceful

- 2nd floor The voyages to Italy: intensely stimulating encounter on both an artistic and friendly level. One of the most astonishing of Juliette’s exiles

- 3rd floor René de Chateaubriand: ‘the’ person in Juliette’s life and a controversial politician. On one hand the representation of her youthfulness, her passion for life, her flamboyant ideas, on the other the wisdom and before that the thought and writing that went into her memoires. This floor is composed like the volumes of his memoirs.

- 4th floor The parlours: as in ‘parler’, to talk and gossip, or how to represent the social whirlwind of the time, made up of literary salons, balls, celebrities (in their own way) and the freeing of morals…

The four pilot rooms show styles from the second and fourth floors.

Jérôme d’Almeida, our photographer since 2005, has taken a series of photos of these rooms, and we are proud to present them here exclusively!

We asked Jérôme to immerse himself in the world of Juliette Récamier. All the accessories seen in the photos are linked to Juliette. The strain of rose, “Curieuses”, supplied by florist Stanislas Draber, dates from her era. The books are biographies of Juliette, written by Chateaubriand. The portraits of Juliette are all period pieces.

Les travaux de rénovation de La Belle Juliette ont commencé en juillet 2009. Le chantier est énorme étant donné qu’il a fallu repenser tout l’hôtel afin de créer un spa, des salons, un bar, des chambres plus spacieuses. Anne Gelbard a rêvé le nouvel hôtel mais était ce un rêve réalisable ?

C’est la question que se pose tout architecte et décorateur car passer des croquis à la maquette puis à la réalisation peut réserver quelques surprises…

C’est pour cette raison que quatre chambres témoins ont été réalisées, visitées, examinées et analysées par toute l’équipe du projet et nous sommes heureux de vous annoncer que le résultat est SPLENDIDE !

Il y a aura 7 ambiances différentes dans les chambres. Anne Gelbard nous présente sa réflexion à propos des différentes ambiances de chambres :

- 1er étage Madame Récamier et Madame de Stael : amies intimes, féminines, contemporaines, l’une est nuance l’autre force

- 2ème étage Les voyages en Italie : rencontres intenses artistiques et humaines, un des lieux d’exil les plus forts

- 3ème étage René de Chateaubriand : le personnage dans la vie de Juliette , d’un côté représentation de sa jeunesse, de sa fougue , de ses idéaux flamboyants, de l’autre la sagesse ou plus tôt la réflexion et l’écriture de ses mémoires, l’homme politique aussi controversé. L’étage se compose comme les volumes de ses mémoires

- 4ème étage Les Causeries : ou comment représenter le tourbillon social, fait de salons littéraires, de bals, personnages phares, libération des mœurs…

Jérôme d’Almeida, notre photographe depuis 2005, a effectué une série de photos de ces chambres et nous vous les présentons en exclusivité !

Nous donc avons demandé à Jérôme de s’emparer de l’univers de Juliette Récamier. Tous les accessoires utilisés sont liés à Juliette. La variété des roses « Curieuses » fournies par Stanislas Draber, fleuriste, date de la même époque. Les livres sont des biographies de Juliette, des œuvres de Chateaubriand. Les portraits de Juliette sont tous d’époque.

Work on our luxury hotel continues, and the more we advance, the clearer things get. If the décor of the place was defined pretty precisely quite a while ago, we have Corinne Moncelli and Anne Gelbard to thank, and the first pieces of the puzzle are starting to arrive!

We dropped in on Anne at her workshop not far from Bastille, not only to see what she is preparing for La Belle Juliette, but also to nose round her inspiring workspace…

It may well be impossible to be creative and tidy at the same time. We’ve always met Anne Gelbard in places where she’s surrounded by a dignified mess of fabrics, objects, leather and colour. Finding her in some sort of zen white cube would be a real shock! The first time we wrote about Anne, it was to explore her tiny workshop in a paved Parisian passageway. Recently, she has move to larger premises that somehow still seem as cluttered with objects books and tools of the trade. It’s in this setting that she does her work for the most prestigious fashion houses, us and herself…
As you might imagine, the preparatory work for La Belle Juliette started a while back, well before the name was officially revealed to the public, and even before building work started. Corinne Moncelli chose Anne for her obvious taste and creativity, and Anne has does much research into the time of Juliette Récamier in order to inspire her work for the hotel, with a theme for each floor and special attention paid to the hotel’s salons; for Juliette, nothing was more important than her salon!
Looking round Anne’s place, you can tell that she works very much from visual stimuli, with objects arranged on tables, numerous books and everything at hand that she needs for her special metal printing on fabric, panels and even feathers.
All the objects here are work related, whether they inspire a choice of colours, a mix of textures or are quite simply brushes that serve as tools to ornament the various surfaces that Anne works with.
And there are always a certain number of non-identified objects around, slightly strange stuff, all part of the place’s charm…
Obviously, we were there above all to see the elements being prepared for La Belle Juliette. For example, these seats that have been upcycled form the old Ferrandi hotel but completely redecorated with yellow/olive green lacquer and comfortable velvet..
These will be mixed with more sobre – but just as refined – elements…
And Anne’s work continues into the realm of dressing the rooms with objects such as antique books. Oh look, the complete works of Chateaubriand!
Anything can be inspiration. Such as below, the gilding on a book cover will be adapted into a wall frieze, giving another link between the the hotel and Juliette’s literary salons.
Other objects are ready to be placed in the upper levels, such as these ones. But what will the theme be here? La Belle Juliette still has a few secrets to reveal before opening later this year…

Peinture de Cacham

C’est sûrement impossible d’être créatif et rangé en même temps. Nous avons toujours connu Anne Gelbard dans un cadre où les échantillons de tissus, matières, cuirs et couleurs se chevauchent, s’entassent, et tant mieux. La dernière fois que nous avons fait un article sur Anne, c’était pour montrer son petit atelier dans un passage pavé parisien. Depuis, elle a déménagé dans un espace plus grand mais toujours aussi rempli d’objets, de livres, et c’est là qu’elle fait son travail pour les grands couturiers, pour nous et pour elle-même…
Comme vous imaginez, le travail de préparation pour La Belle Juliette a commencé il y a un moment déjà, bien avant que le nom soit dévoilé au public, avant même que les travaux de constructions commencent. Corinne Moncelli a choisi Anne pour sa finesse et créativité évidentes, et Anne a fait beaucoup de recherches sur l’époque de Juliette Récamier pour affiner la décoration de l’hôtel, avec un thème pour chaque étage et une attention spéciale pour les salons ; pour Juliette, rien n’était plus important que son salon !
En regardant chez Anne, on voit que c’est quelqu’un de visuel, avec plein d’objets étalés sur des tables, des livres à la pelle et tout le matériel qu’il lui faut pour ses impressions métallisées spectaculaires sur tissu, des panneaux ou même sur des plumes.
Les objets dans l’atelier sont tous des outils de travail, que cela soit l’inspiration pour un mélange de couleurs, une juxtaposition de matières ou – plus classiquement – les pinceaux et pots de peintures qui servent à ornementer les divers surfaces qu’Anne travaille.
Et puis il y a des objets non identifiés, des choses un peu étranges, ce qui fait le charme de son atelier…
Evidemment, nous sommes venus voir surtout les éléments pour La Belle Juliette. Par exemple, de sièges recyclés de l’ancien Hôtel Ferrandi, complètement relookés avec de la laque jaune/vert olive et du velours confortable…
Le mélange devrait se faire avec des éléments plus sobres mais toujours aussi raffinés…
Et le travail d’Anne continue pour définier aussi les objets qui seront utilisés pour décorer les pièces, comme ces livres anciens. Tiens, l’œuvre complète de Chateaubriand !
Tout peut servir d’inspiration. Comme ici, où le motif décoratif sur les livres devrait être repris pour une frise dans les salons, liant encore une fois le lieu avec la littérature.
Et d’autres objets attendent être installer dans les étages, comme ceux-ci. Mais quel sera le thème ? La Belle Juliette a encore quelques belles surprises à vous dévoiler d’ici la rentrée…

After being so kind as to lend her name to our new hotel, the least we could do was go and visit. So last weekend we went to the Montmartre cemetery – and surprisingly expansive it is – to visit the grave of Juliette Récamier, where we found that many of her friends (and lovers) are still by her side…

Less well known than the Père Lachaise cemetery, Montmartre’s is nonetheless one of the largest in Paris. With 11 hectares and nearly 750 trees, it’s also a very agreeable place for a quiet springtime walk. In its current form, the cemetery has existed since 1825, and it’s funny to think that when Juliette diedi it had only existed for twenty years.

Entering via avenue Rachel, we quickly found Juliette’s grave, where she is buried togeter with her family… and her friend Ballanche (grave 3 of the 30th division. You can downloadf a PDF map here).

Just next door is Ampère. Much like Ballanche, he was in love with Juliette for most of his life. She died when he was 50, and even if he found love with another woman later on, it is surely not coincidence that they are only 3 metres apart for all eternity.

If you too would like to visit Juliette, Ballanche and Ampère (as well as Degas, Offenbach, François Truffaut, Stendhal, Zola…) the Montmartre cemetery (here) is open from 16th March – 5th November from 8am – 6pm, and from 6th November – 15th March from 8am – 5.30pm. Weekend opening is slightly later – 8.30am on Saturdays and 9am on Sundays and public holidays.

Elle a donné son nom à notre nouvel hôtel, et la moindre de choses était de lui rendre visite. Direction le cimetière de Montmartre, d’une taille surprenante, pour voir la tombe de Juliette Récamier… et constater que certains des ses amis (et ses amours) sont toujours près d’elle…

Moins connue que le cimetière de Père Lachaise, celui de Montmartre est pourtant un des plus grands de Paris. Avec 11 hectares et près de 750 arbres, il est aussi très agréable pour une balade printanière. Dans sa forme actuelle, le cimetière existe depuis 1825 et il est drôle de penser qu’il existait depuis seulement 20 ans quand Juliette est morte.

Juste à côté se trouve Ampère. Comme Ballanche, il a été fou amoureux de Juliette pour une grande partie de sa vie. Elle est morte quand il avait 50 ans, et même s’il a trouvé l’amour avec une autre femme après, le fait que leur deux tombes se trouvent à 3 mètres l’une de l’autre n’est sûrement pas un hasard.

Si vous voulez aussi rendre visite à Juliette, Ballanche, Ampère (et aussi Dalida, Degas, Offenbach, François Truffaut, Stendhal, Zola…) le cimetière de Montmartre (ici) est ouvert du 16 mars au 5 novembre de 8h à 18h et du 6 novembre au 15 mars de 8h à 17h30. Ouverture des portes le samedi à 8h30, le dimanche et les jours fériés à 9h.

When Corinne Moncelli started to think about the identity that she wanted to give to the establishment that would replace the Hôtel Ferrandi, she fixed the following points as the foundations for the project:

- the hotel would be a luxury four-star (equivalent to a five star hotel), with a prestigious organic spa, a bar and salons that should be at the forefront of cultural events and exchange.
- the interior decoration would be designed by someone with no links to the world of hotels, in order to have a fresh approach.
- the new hotel would be the occasion to tell a variety of stories.
- a heroine from the 19th century would inspire the main theme of the hotel.

After these decisions, the choice for our historic personality was simple…
A 19th century heroine who frequented all the intellectuals and politicians of her time, someone endowed with exceptional beauty (she was often called “the beauty of beauties”) whose love life was extraordinary, and who was gifted in the art of receiving visitors, holding a successful salon from the age of 15 until her death at 72.

And so it is Juliette Récamier, known to all as “la belle Juliette” who has given her name to our new hotel which will be opening in October 2010.
