The exhibition includes examples of the full range of techniques employed by the artist plus those works which lie outside the Musée d'Orsay's usual period, Willumsen having died in 1958, in Le Cannet, at the age of 95.

Willumsen was an original personality and practised sculpture, engraving, photography and ceramics as well as painting. Initially attracted by Raffaëlli's Naturalism, Willumsen came in contact with Parisian avant-garde circles in the 1890s and his painting, influenced by Gauguin and the Nabis - especially Vallotton - leaned towards Cloisonnism and Synthetism. However he soon moved away from French Symbolism and developed a more expressionist style, marked by his discovery in 1900 of the immense landscapes of the New World. His large paintings of mountains and the sea inevitably bring Munch and Hodler to mind.
