"Wounded artefacts. repair work in Africa" at the Musee Quai Branly in Paris till September 16, 2007
:: Art and Cultural Information
Wounded artefacts tackles the unexplored theme of local repair work carried out by native peoples, and reflects above all upon the poetic nature of restoration.
Repairing, restoring, restitching, reinforcing, sealing…
Through this almost mystical continuation of life and power that the hand of man confers upon the artefact, the latter seems to rise above its own ephemeral nature. The exhibition focuses on the Musée du quai Branly African collections, and presents 120 ‘wounded artefacts’ selected from among the 500 repaired works in the collections (60,000 items in all). A multimedia programme sheds light upon the various stages of an artefact’s deterioration and consequent restoration.
