Glances of Uzbekistan, a photo exhibition at the Hôtel Eiffel Park, Paris
:: Hôtels Paris Rive Gauche aiment la photographie
Michel Fouteau explains his project to us...

During a voyage to Uzbekistan in March 2007, I had the occasion to get a fascinating glance of an ethnically complex population: Uzbeks, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Turkmen’s, Tajiks, Karakalpaks, Russians, Koreans…
This variety is not only expressed through their faces, but also through their clothes.
Each year, on 21st March, the countries of Central Asia, as in other countries of the Middle East, celebrate Navrouz, the beginning of the year: indeed, the start of Spring is a beautiful symbol of revival. In Uzbekistan, this ancestral festival was celebrated well before the appearance of Islam and survived the Soviet presence which “finished” when the country's independence was declared in 1991.
The photographs presented for the exhibition show a selection of the many encounters made at this time of the year, primarily in Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand and close to Chakhrisabz. Some images reflect the beautiful spring light as well as the festive and good-natured atmosphere which reigned at this time: I take great pleasure in sharing these impressions with you.
