Cousin printanier de la FIAC, ArtParis est « une plateforme d’échanges ‘crossover’ » qui « repousse les limites des salons d’art » et « crée un nouveau format de foire d’art moderne ». Rien que ça ! Sceptique ? Nous vous expliquons…

Bon, si vous ne faites pas votre propre hype, qui va le faire ? Et ArtParis ne fait dans la dentelle, avec des superlatifs à tout va, et nous les comprenons ; dans l’ombre (énorme) de la FIAC il fait sûrement très froid.

Soyons donc indulgents et espérons que les 120 galeries internationales d’art contemporain, d’art moderne et de design attireront 48.000 visiteurs comme l’année dernière.

Peut-être le moment fort sera le dîner caritatif de l’association de la mère de Carla Bruni, Dessine l’Espoir, contre le SIDA ? À 800€ la place, il faudrait se dépêcher. Vous hésitez ? N’oubliez pas que c’est déductible des impôts à 66 %… Sinon, d’autres projets insolites sont aussi proposés…

An important exhibition of the American painter’s work that should have crowds flocking the Grand Palais in Paris – the first retrospective of Hopper ever to be staged in the city. Here’s all the details…

The Grand Palais in Paris always seems to be organise quality exhibitions that appeal to the genral public. After Warhol, Picasso and Monet, this Edward Hopper exhibition is another example. The painter, known above all for his paintings of the United States, first honed his art in Paris in the early 20th century before returning to New York to perfect his melancolic style, often showing scenes from the everyday life of the American middle class..

There seem be constant exhibtions about Hopper around the world. One at the Fondation Hermitage in Switzerland ended in October 2010, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York has another that ends in April 2011, but the retrospective at the Grand Palais looks to be the most important organised for quite a while, withillustrations, paintings, sketches and watercolours that show first his formative years, followed by his mastery of a style very much his own, still popular today (although strangely enough, at the time of his death in 1967, his popularity has waned as people concentrated on more ‘modern’, abstract styles).

Afer an initial show at the Zürcher Studio in New York this summer, Wild Feature 2 at the Galerie Zürcher is the Parisian version of a collective exhibition showcasing the work of youg American artists who all share a « fauve attitude » influenced by he 21st century.

For example, the disquieting scenes of James B. Franklin, the bright landscapes of Brendan Cass (above), the almost surrealist approach of Melissa Brown or the childlike style of Misaki Kawai…

The exhibition is curated by one of its artists, Brian Belott, the only one of the group to have already shown his work in France already (at the Contemporary Drawing Fair this year). We think the fresh and colourful work of these very different artists is intriguing. Perhaps you should check it out?

I thought this art fair was a new event, but after looking on the official site I see that it was founded in 1943 during the occupation!

I have to admit that I’m not very keen on the sculptures and painting I saw on the site, but ome of the photo work looks interesting. As with a lot of art fairs, tastes differ…

The Salon de mai (May Art Fair) is at the Espace Commines, 17 rue Commines, 75003 Paris. Métro Filles du Calvaire (line 8). Open from midday to 8pm, with late night opening until 10.30pm on 14th. And – surprisingly – you have to pay to enter! 5€ (plus 10€ if you want to buy the catalogue).

Dans ce petit salon d’artistes, peintres, photographes etc. vous tomberez sûrement sur notre ami Yury Toroptsov qui a fait partie de notre projet photo PHPA (et d’autres gens gentilles et talentueux sans doute…)

J’avais l’impression que ce salon était nouveau, mais en regardant le site officiel je vois que je me trompe ; il a été fondé en 1943 pendant l’occupation !
