If Paris Fashion Week isn’t enough for you, here comes Paris Design Week, which is taking place just after the Maison et Objet trade fair, and suggest a trail around six areas of Paris, with conference, cocktail parties and presentations.

Sounds a little like Designer’s Days to us, but perhaps it’s worth checking out, in only for the oddball events on offer…It difficult to know in advance whether this sort of event will be genuinely interesting or not, especially is it’s the first one ever, so let’s give them the benefit of the doubt.

The Paris Design Week website is fairly enticing; you are going to « discover, meet, exchange ideas and share liveable design with publishers, designers, galleries, institutions, hotels and reastaurants in the heart of Paris. » (at least, that’s what they say). Their video makes it look more like some sort of acid trip.

Their map of the route to follow, lovely on the eyes and painful on the mouse finger, has two trails going through the Left Bank, with quite a few places to see not far from our hotels. Perhaps it’s a good way to explore Saint-Germain-des-Prés while discovering all sorts of trendy shops.Many events are on offer, but almost half are by invitation only (especially those with food and/or drink), but there are a few open to all that jumped out at us:

- Monday 12th September – finger food and drinks at Laguiole for the presentation of the new Alain Delon knife!

- Thursday 15th September – a ‘champagne’ cocktail (i.e. ‘sparkling wine’) at l’Eclaireur, with the presentation of a suite designed in collaboration with Philippe Starck (i.e. they did it, he said ‘OK’).

- Thursday 15th September – a chic house music club night chez Ladurée (???) with « music by Stavef ». Yes, Stavef.

…and at the weekend, there’s a crazy drinks thing and bonkers brunch at Le Purgatoire (gracious!), heavily sponsored by Magimix. Perhaps Stavef will be there with his mixer.The Paris Design Week runs from 12th – 18th September 2011

Après la Paris Fashion Week, voici la Paris Design Week qui tombe juste après le salon Maison et Objet ; un parcours qui traverse six quartiers, avec des conférences, des cocktails, de présentations.

Semblable aux Designer’s Days, mais à voir (désolé pour le montage épileptique de la bande-annonce, un véritable trop-plein d’effets vidéos…)

Difficile de se faire une idée de ce genre d’événement, surtout quand c’est la toute première édition, mais le site du Paris Design Week est assez alléchant ; vous allez « découvrir, rencontrer, échanger et partager du design à vivre avec des éditeurs, des designers, des galeries, des institutions, des hôtels et des restaurants au cœur de Paris ». Enfin, c’est ce qu’ils disent.Leur plan du parcours, beau à regarder mais pas forcément très ergonomique, montre les deux parcours qui passent Rive Gauche, avec pas mal de lieux design et déco près de nos hôtels. Une façon de vous balander à Saint-Germain-des-Prés en découvrant le quartier et ses boutiques chic.Parmi les événements proposés, dont la moitié est uniquement accessible sur invitation (notamment les cocktails), nous avons remarqué quelques pépites ouvertes à tous :

- lundi 12 septembre – un cocktail dînatoire chez Laguiole, avec la présentation du couteau Alain Delon !

- jeudi 15 septembre – un cocktail ‘champagne’ (sous-entendu ‘du mousseux’) à l’Eclaireur, avec présentation d’une suite réalisé en collaboration avec Philippe Starck, (ça va, le ‘champagne’ ne tâche pas).

- jeudi 15 septembre – une soirée house chic chez Ladurée (???) avec « music by Stavef ». Ça veut dire ‘musique par Stavef’.

…et le week-end, un apéritif décalé et brunch délirant au Purgatoire (ce nom !) avec la forte présence de Magimix. Peut-être Stavef n’était pas dispo.La Paris Design Week a lieu du 12 au 18 septembre 2011

This annual mini-festival lets you see the latest creations and innovations, with a mix of exhibitions and explanations in 66 different venues…What a great way to discover some interesting spaces and interesting new design! Anyone can check out Designer’s Days 2011, it’s free, and you might just end up learning something about design, it’s human side and the technical side.

Between the 16th and 20th June, you can attend any of the twenty-odd discussions/presentations (and even a design « party »!) or just consult the map and pick something that seems appealing.Near us on the Rive Gauche there’s plenty to see, such as the noise reducing domes at Bulthaup, a first showing of new designer chairs to be launched after the summer by Hermès, an interactive device for creating news forms using your voice at Maxalto, innovative wall coverings at Arte… and the list goes on.

Ce parcours de design vous montre les dernières créations et innovations, un mélange d’expositions et explications en 66 étapes…Quel agréable façon de découvrir quelques lieux à Paris et voir les dernières créations dans le monde du design ; avec ce parcours pointu mais ouvert à tous, Designer’s Days 2011 peut vous aider à mieux comprendre le design, son côté humain comme son côté technique.

Yesterday’s modern is increasingly quickly today’s retro. If you have nostalgia pangs for the furniture, fashion or, er, stuff from the 50s – 90s, here’s your chance to play catch up…

For the previous editions of the Puces du Design (this is the 22nd already!), we expressed our surprise at the 8às being included. Well forget that: the nineties are now included too! Looks like some things become quicker than they used to.

The organisers of the event are keen to stress that this is a ‘respectful’ event, with a beautiful setting (alongside the canal at bassin de la Villette), reasonable prices (although you only have their word on that) and above all, free entrance. Hurrah!

For this latest edition, there are a couple of new attractions, including a sale of electronic and video games from the 70s and 80s, and – for the first time – a stand of just lighting. The weather’s going to be a bit grey, but this looks like it’s definitely worth checking out.

The Puces du Design (22nd design and fashion antique fair) is on the Quai de la Loire (here) from 27th – 30th May 2010. Open every days from 10am – 7pm (9pm Thursday 27th May). And it’s free!

Le moderne d’hier est devenu rapidement le rétro d’aujourd’hui. Si vous êtes nostalgique pour le mobilier, la mode ou les objets des années 50 à 90, voici votre séance de rattrapage…

Pour les précédentes éditions des Puces du Design (nous en sommes au 22ème tout de même !), nous nous étonnions que les années 80 soient représentées. Désormais, c’est au tour des années 90 d’être incluses. Comme quoi les objets cultes d’hier sont déjà activement recherchés par certains collectionneurs.

Les organisateurs insistent sur le côté respectueux de l’événement, avec un beau lieu (le bassin de la Villette), des prix abordables (ce qui reste à prouver) et surtout la gratuité ; pas de prix d’entrée pour cette foire en plein air, et tant mieux !

Pour cette nouvelle édition il y a des nouveautés aux Puces du Design, notamment la vente de jeux électroniques des années 70 et 80, et pour la première fois, un stand exclusivement consacré au luminaire. Le temps s’annonce un peu maussade, mais à voir tout de même.

Les Puces du Design (22ème marché des antiquaires du design et de la mode) ont lieu au Quai de la Loire (ici) du 27 au 30 mai 2010. Ouvert de 10h à 19h (21h le jeudi 27 mai). Gratuit !

Strange to think that such a place has never existed in Paris until now; this large complex recently inaugurated not far from Bastille exists to help designers in various ways, but also has an exhibition space on the ground floor to inform the general public. We went along to check out their first exhibition called ouverture(s) or ‘opening(s)’ which has a very interesting layout…

Bastille has always been a centre of creation in Paris, with numerous furniture workshops and artist spaces. Even if the old traditional shops are now giving way to clothes stores, there are some amazing, semi-hidden spaces in the area that are a testament to its past. One such space is the huge building and impressive courtyard that now house the Lieu du Design.

It’s mostly dedicated to helping professionals with their administrative work (such as finding industrial partners) and also have a materials library where designers can see and touch the latest elements that can be integrated into a design project. However, the ground floor is given over to a gallery space whoe objective is to explain and demystify design to the general public.
The first exhibition, ouverture(s) is a strong start, and explains ewactly why the Lieu d Design exists and what they help that they can give. The layout is extremely amusing, with a system of automatic orange balls on rails guiding you from screen to screen via odd machine. Each screen explain a little more about the space, and following the balls around turns out to be a great deal of fun!
There are several different routes, and each screen contains several different messages, meaning that you can go back through the exhibition several times and get new information (although – of course – it is all in French).

Check it out…

We think this first exhibition is well worth checking out, if not only for its originality. You’ll also discover one of the secret courtyards of Bastille, and the monumental architecture that went with manufacture back in the days…

Des vestiges de l'ancienne vie du bâtiment

C’est vraiment drôle qu’un endroit pareil n’a jamais existé à Paris ; ce grand bâtiment, non loin de Bastille et inauguré récemment, est là pour conseiller des créateurs et informer le public. Nous sommes allés leur rendre visite, surtout pour leur première exposition ouverture(s).

Bastille a toujours été un quartier foisannant avec beaucoup d’ateliers de création de meubles, voire des créations en tout genre. De plus en plus, les magasins historiques cèdent leur place à ceux de l’habillement, mais des endroits extraordinaires existent toujours, comme le bâtiment dans lequel se trouve le tout nouveau Lieu du Design.

Si une grande partie des ressources sont dédiés aux professionnels, comme la matériauthèque qui permet une recherche sur les dernières matières disponibles pour la fabrication, il y a aussi une galerie au rez-de-chaussée qui sert de vitrine en essayant de banaliser et expliquer le design à tout le monde en expliquant les matières, la fabrication les démarches des créateurs…
Et la première exposition, ouverture(s) commence fort avec l’explication du raison d’être du lieu en utilisant une mise en scène assez originale : un système automatique avec des balles oranges au plafond vous guident. Au fil de la visite vous vous arrêterez devant des écrans où on vous expliquera les multiples services que propose le lieu.  Très ludique !
Chaque parcours est différent, avec des rails qui guident les balles vers des machines assez étranges, et chaque écran d’information peut diffuser plusieurs message différents. Vous pouvez donc suivre plusieurs balles (même plusieurs fois) sans vous ennuyer.

Regardez…

L’exposition inaugurale et sa scénographie valent donc le détour, et la transformation d’un vieux bâtiment de création en nouveau lieu design intrigue. Allez-y, c’est nouveau et gratuit !
