Two baby female panthers, Pati and Jaya, have been born at the zoo in the Jardin des Plantes, and you can go and see the cute balls of fluff!

They look sweet right now, but wait a few years and they could do you quite a bit of harm with their sharp claws! The clouded panther babies were born 14th May this year, but the zoo waited to make sure they were in good health before making an announcement.

It is believed that there are only 10.000 clouded panthers left in the world, as their coats are in high demand on the black market, despite being a protected species. They are also surprising vulnreable when on the ground in their native habitat, the humid forests of southeast Asia.

It’s the second time in as many years that the parents have given birth at the Jardin des Plantes, and the two kids will be staying there for the next five or six years before moving on to another European zoo. In the meantime, you can go and see them, preferably in the afternoon when they are most active.

Elles ont l’air mignonnes mais un jour, avec leur griffes acérées, ces panthères pourraient vous faire très mal ! Issues d’une race rare, ces panthères longibandes ou « nébuleuses » sont nées le 14 mai, mais la ménagerie a attendu pour être sûr qu’elles étaient en bonne santé avant d’annoncer la naissance.

On pense qu’il ne reste plus que 10.000 panthères longibandes dans le monde, car elles sont prisées pour leurs peaux et assez vulnérables dans leur habitat naturel, les forêts humides du sud-est de l’Asie.

C’est la deuxième fois en deux ans qu’une naissance a lieu de panthère a lieu au Jardin des Plantes, et les deux jeunes y resteront 5 ou 6 ans avant repartir vers un zoo européen. En attendant, vous pouvez les voir facilement l’après-midi, période où elles sont le plus actives.

20 years already? Wow! And this festival is still just as popular. This year the theme is « What it’s like to be 20″ (how apt!) and as always all the screenings cost zero euros. Hurrah! Here’s the details…

Ah, a balmy summer evening, the stars, a deckchair (7€, or 20€ for five), a picnic (bring your own)… Simple pleasures! The Villette outdoor film festival has been spreading the love – free, if you will – for the last 20 years. It’s strange to think that soem of the people now attending weren’t even born when the festival was started!

The concept hasn’t radically changed: each evening at nightfall, you can see a film for free (30-odd over the festival period). No recent films but some absolute classics and even some new short films by student from Paris films school la Femis (each Friday).

20 ans déjà ! Ce festival a toujours la côté, et le thème c’est année (justement) est Avoir 20 ans, avec Sandrine Bonnaire comme parraine et toutes les séances à zéro euros ! Voici les détails…

Un soir d’été, les étoiles, un transat (7€, ou 20€ les cinq), un pique-nique et un film gratuit (enfin, c’est vous qui amenez le pique-nique, bien entendu). Quel bonheur ! Le festival de film en plein de la Villette répand du bonheur comme ça – gratuitement – depuis 20 ans. Ça fait drôle de penser que certains qui y vont maintenant n’étaient pas nés quand le festival a été créé !

Le concept n’a pas radicalement changé ; chaque soir à la tombée de la nuit, vous avez droit à un film gratuit, une bonne trentaine en tout pendant le festival. Pas de nouveautés, mais des classiques et même la possibilité de découvrir de nouveau court-métrages faits par les étudiants de la Femis (chaque vendredi).

Escape the heat of Paris this summer, relax with a barge trip, get dropped off at the beach, go to a free ball… all for just 1 or 2 euros! Here’s the details…

Nature’s never far in Paris and neither is water! To help people to get to know the canal that leads out of the city and almost instantly into the countryside, this festival (called L’Eté du Canal, l’Ourcq en Fêtes in French) runs every weekend until the end of Summer, with boat trips taking you back and forth from the Bassin de la Villette in the northeast of Paris. You can step off at one of the beaches provided along the way, check out the architecture, nature and above all the calm that the canal has to offer. The cost? 1€ each way on Saturdays, 2€ Sundays. There’s also a more shallow, quieter part of the canal (created in 1821) that you can visit on board an authentic light barge that will slowly drift you through the Sevran forest, navigating five locks on the way. The voyage takes 50 minutes, and there’s a Google Map here.

Other interesting events are also on offer:

- Theatrical walks base don the canal. Two different routes finished off by a play in a theatr not far from the canal.

- A paella cruise on 12th June!

- A cinema-themed guided tour with an actor as your guide

- A floating bridge across the canal at la Villette

- Each Sunday, a tradition French chanson ball on a barge at one of the stop-off points.

- plus various events at each port (theatre, cinema, concerts, circus, street performances…)

And if you feel like hiring a bike instead of taking the barge, the banks of the canal have great cycle routes you can follow. In just a few minutes you leave the city well behind, so make the most of the warm weather and make a break for the country!

La nature n’est pas loin de Paris, et l’eau non plus ! Pour familiariser les gens avec les attraits surprenants de la Seine Saint Denis, le festival L’Eté du Canal, l’Ourcq en Fêtes propose tous les week-ends de l’été des navettes à bas prix à partir du Bassin de la Villette. Vous pouvez descendre à une des plages proposées sur le parcours et profiter de l’architecture, la nature et surtout le calme ambients sur le chemin. 1€ le trajet le samedi, 2€ le dimanche. Aussi, à bord d’une authentique demi-flûte d’Ourcq, vous pouvez pénétrez dans le parc forestier de Sevran en découvrant la partie bucolique du canal, créé en 1821 (50 minutes de voyage entre Tremblay-en-France et Sevran, avec 5 écluses à négocier !). Plan ici.

D’autres événements intéressants sont aussi programmés :

- Des balades théâtrales autour du canal. Deux parcours différents qui se terminent avec un spectacle non loin du canal.

Sachez que si vous préférez vous balader en vélo, les berges sont aménagées et vous permettent d’arriver dans de grands parcs très rapidement. Profitez des beaux jours pour vous mettre au frais !

Shark attack in Paris! Now there’s a headline for you. This is actually an interesting looking exhibition, great for the kids, both fun and educative too!

Sharks, manta rays and Holocephali make for strange cousins, but you’ll be able to get to know them in the flesh (as well as naturally preserved) at the Porte Dorée aquarium in this new exhibition, both spectacular and serious.

You’ll see zebra sharks, bamboo sharks (cultivated in aquariums), blacktip reef sharks (fished in Indonesia), and several species of Amazonian rays that regularly reproduce at the aquarium itself.

There will also be 20 preserved specimens made especially for the exhibition by Bernard Bourlès, the sole specialist in cartilaginous fish taxidermy in France. The skeletons, teeth and fossilised jawbones exposed, some of which are hundreds of millions of years old, come from the palaeontological collections of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle.

Don’t miss the fossilised Holocephali brain, 300 million years old (and shown for the first time ever) and the life-size model of a Megalodon jaw which measures nearly 2 metres high. The Megalodon is almost certainly the ancestor of the white shark and was one of the biggest races of sharks to have ever lived on Earth.

The exhibition « Dans le sillage de requins » (In the wake of the sharks) is at the Porte Dorée Aquarium (here) from 2nd February 2010 2 février – 6th March 2011. Closed Mondays. Open weekeday from 10am – 5.15pm, weekends and public holidays from 10am – 7pm. Admission: 6.50€ / 5€

Les requins arrivent ! Vos enfants vont adorer… et apprendre des choses en même temps.

Des requins, des raies et des chimères, voilà un groupe de cousins inattendus dont des spécimens vivants, naturalisés et fossilisés sont réunis pour une présentation aussi spectaculaire qu’éducative dans les bacs et les salles de l’Aquarium de la Porte Dorée.

Vous verrez des requins-zèbre (pêché dans l’océan pacifique), requins-chabot (issus de reproductions en aquarium), requins à pointes noires (pêchés en Indonésie), et plusieurs espèces de raies d’Amazonie qui se reproduisent régulièrement sur place.

Il y aura aussi une vingtaine de spécimens naturalisés pour cette exposition par Bernard Bourlès, unique spécialiste de la taxidermie de ces poissons cartilagineux en France. Les squelettes, dents, mâchoires fossiles présentés, dont certains ont plusieurs centaines de millions d’années, proviennent des collections de paléontologie du Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle.

Ne ratez pas le cerveau fossile de chimère, vieux de 300 millions d’années (et exposé pour la première fois au public) ou la reconstitution grandeur nature d’une mâchoire de Megalodon qui mesure près de 2 mètres de hauteur. Le Megalodon est probablement l’ancêtre du requin blanc. Il s’agit de l’un des plus gros spécimens de requins ayant jamais vécu sur Terre.

L’exposition Dans le sillage de requins a lieu à l’Aquarium de la Porte Dorée (ici) du 2 février 2010 au 6 mars 2011. Fermé le lundi. Ouvert en semaine de 10h à 17h15, les week-end et jour fériés de 10h à 19h. Entrée : 6,50€ / 5€
