 APRIL : YURY TOROPTSOV |
SOMMEIL They let me spend a night in a hotel of my choice in Paris. In return, I gave them a photo of my hotel bed, and a dream I dreamed in it. It was a warm summer day. I met Catherine Deneuve. She was quietly sitting on grass enjoying the view of a river. Standing next to her was an open case filled with professional makeup products. It was a moment of peace between takes, I believe. She was all by herself when I came up to her. “Excuse me, Madame, but I just wanted to say hello. I’m Yury, a photographer. We were in touch.”. She turned her head my way, looked at me, smiled and said “Hello”. “I remember you”. I told her I wanted to photograph her. She agreed. And there, I woke up.

Biography Born in 1974 in a small rural community near Vladivostok, Yury Toroptsov left his native Russia in 1998 to study in New York after having won a prestigious scholarship. Upon obtaining his master’s degree in non-profit management he pursued this career in a non-governmental sector. In 2003 Yury Toroptsov, then a consultant for the United Nations, decided to change his profession and follow his long-time passion – photography. Yury Toroptsov now lives and works in Paris.
