"Edouard de’Pazzi" photo exhibition at the Maison Europeenne de la photographie in Paris till June 3, 2007

Edouard de’Pazzi” is both an existential wanderer and a collector of elaborately composed or spontaneous images, accumulated like so many feelings, sensations and visions.

Edouard de’Pazzi has followed an unusual creative path that has led him from writing to photography. He then delves into this photographic corpus to compose diptychs and sequences. The objects, bodies and places that emerge from this process seem to float in a space and time that is deliberately undefinable and indeterminate, inviting the viewer to lose himself the better to find himself. This exhibition presents various pieces made between 2001 and 2006 chosen from a set of images entited Memento Mori, an allusion to our intimate and archaic awareness of the transience of life, and to the symbolic pictorial representations of our condition as mortals that art historians refer to as “Vanitas”.

Most of these pictures were made over the past five years, though some come from older collections. Fantasmatic and fantasmagorical visions drawn from the subterranean world of the imagination gradually come to the surface like drowned cropses. It is always surprising to note how recurrent these visions are, the way the same subjects keep coming back, the way the photographer is attracted to the same themes and fascinated by the same signs as time goes by.
