Edward Scissorhands at the Théâtre du Châtelet

After a stage adaptation of The Fly recently, here’s another film turned into a stage show, not an opera this time but a song ‘n’ dance number……

Stage musicals are all the rage in Paris at the moment (The Lion King, Fame, Cabaret and more) but translating a Hollywood film into stage is a fairly recent phenomenon; usually the stage show comes first and the film follows. The opera version of The Fly got mixed reviews at its world première in Paris a few months ago, so let’s hope that this new adaptation of Edward Scissorhands will fare better.

To be fair, it looks like the show has success written all over it. Runs in Sydney and London (and over 400 shows round the world) have been a hit already. Matthew Bourne, famous for a smash hit Swan Lake, has created the show, with Terry Davies adding his music to that of Danny Elfman (taken from the film). With thrity dancers and twelve live musicians, this could make for some very entertaining theatre!
