Music and Cinema exhibition at the Cité de la Musique
from 19th March – 18th August 2013

With such an obviously rich subject, it’s surprising no other exhibition like this has been organised in Paris before – an exploration of the link between music and cinema that will enthral you at the Cité de la Musique.

You can even submit your own film, using one of their four music choices, and win prizes in their Dailymotion contest…

When films were still silent, music obviously played an important part in creating atmosphere. When the talkies arrived, music really came into its own, sometimes becoming more iconic than the film it was supposed to accompany.

On two floors rather than the usual one (it’s a big’un!), the exhibition is divided into four main parts:

Before filming – how music is conceived way before the film even exists, and how this music can even influence the film at this stage.

After filming – music in the film and as the subject of a film.

Postproduction – adaptation, mixing…

After the film is released – 80 themes and 40 songs to remind you of your favourite films.

A large screening room will also show dozens of  film clips.

Organised around the exhibition is a large cycle de concerts, (including Michael Nyman and the London Symphony Orchestra), 8 different concerts in the exhibition itself (with 20 musicians!), workshops for kids, the Dailymotion contest, and an official catalogue (352 pages, 200 colour illustrations, 39€) here on amazon.fr.Exposition Musique et cinéma à la Cité de la Musique du 19 mars au 18 août 2013Jazz, Bollywood, musicals, French chanson and The Beatles – something for everyone!
