Monumenta 2014 at the Grand Palais
from 10th May – 22nd June 2014

After being helmed by names such as Anish Kapoor, the latest sort-of annual huge installation at the Grand Palais (it was cancelled last year) is called The Strange City and is by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, who present not one huge work but almost a whole town.

Here’s all the info.
Monumenta 2014 au Grand Palais du 10 mai au 22 juin 2014The eight structures that make up The Strange City are based around the idea of utopias and the imagination, finding their source in the Renaissance, romanticism and modern science. You can take a look at the early stages of construction in situ here).
Monumenta 2014 au Grand Palais du 10 mai au 22 juin 2014To accompany your visit, over fifty staff will be mingling around to answer your questions. There are also six different guided visits (basic visit, one for those who know nothing about the Grand Palais, one for families, one for people with handicaps…) and there’s a mobile app for iPhone and Android that will help you tweet and post photos to Facebook (yippee).

A large number of cultural events also accompany Monumenta – concerts, a selection of films, contemporary dance (or “a choregraphed poem” as the site puts it), a recital called The Scriabine Mystery, a huge free party for the Fête de la Musique on 21st June with We Love Art

But is anyone going to be able to explain what exactly is going on in these promo videos for the event? We don’t get it at all…
