Jean-Baptiste Huet exhibition at the Musée Cognacq-Jay 6th February -5th June 2016

Le musée Cognacq-Jay devotes its new exhibition to prolific painter Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745-1811), whose bucolic scenes of animals and countryside became his speciality, practically defining the genre in the late 18th century.

Here’s all the info.

Although his name might not ring any bells, the work of Jean-Baptiste Huet is to be found everywhere – his scenes of fauna and flora and pastoral compositions were extremely popular in his era, with idyllic scenes of shepherdesses guarding their flock, countryside scenes of lakes and rolling hills, and gentle, playful animals.

His work was of constant quality, and the fact that he often signed and dated his paintings probably means that they were intended to be sold.

Later, he used the elements from his scenes for wallpaper and fabrics, including the famouse toile de Jouy, only increasing his success.
Exposition Jean-Baptiste Huet au Musée Cognacq-Jay du 6 février au 5 juin 2016The museum is showing 72 paintings, graphic works and decorative items in orde to give an overview of the man’s talents, and has concocted a special site for you to design your own toile de Jouy motif using a bank of over forty images, all taken from the exhibition.

An official catalogue is available (176 pages, 100 illustrations, 30€ here at amazon.fr), there are workshops for kids and families, conferences…

And the work of the artist is also featured in a cycle of lectures at the Ecole du Louvre called “Animals in art”, which is headed by the curator of the exhibition.
