A new museum in Paris! The Musée du 11 Conti opens 30th September 2017

The Monnaie de Paris (not far from our hotels) has been undergoing full renovation and transformations over the past few years, a project they call Métalmorphoses, and the startling results are starting to show.

After having Guy Savoy install his three Michelin-starred restaurant there, now it’s turn for the venue’s museum to reopen in a completely remodelled space, showing how – since the 18th century – coins have been struck (and continue to be) in this incredible building, the last real factory inside the Paris city limits.

Here’s all the info.

If the history behind how coins are designed and made interests you, you are going to love the Musée du 11 Conti (which gets its name, unsurprisingly, from its address as part of the ‘Monnaie de Paris’ building).

This new designer space is you chance to discover how coins have been manufactured on-site in this majestic building since the 18th century.

The museum is divided into three themed parts:

Create. Science and Technology.

In this section you’ll have a partial view of the workshops that create the coins, you’ll learn more about the foundry and sculpting process and even be able to strike your very own creation!

Reveal.Treasures and History of Art.

Here, you’ll see silver and gold lingots exposed – the raw material for coin production – as well as treasures rescued from the seabed, or won in war, as well as pieces by contemporary designers.

Trade. History & Economics.

This part of the museum attempts to show all the forms of coins that exist around the world, using an interactive 3D installation, in the hope of inspiring visitors to help maintain the traditions and skills of coin manufacture.

The museum offers 90-minute guided visits every Thursday at 7pm and weekends at 3pm (it’s probably best to book in advance here).

A 60-minute family visit is also available Wednesdays at 3pm and weekends at 11am (book ici).

If you’re short on time, the focused visit every Thursday at 1pm might be of interest. In thirty minutes, you’ll learn more about one particular subject touched upon in the museum (Who was the engraver of Louis XIV? How do you become an engraver?)

And starting 20th October, every Sunday at 4pm there’s an architectural visit lasting one hour that will allow you to discover the style and interior design of the Hôtel de la Monnaie, a grand building dating from the 18th century.

The new Musée du 11 Conti (here) opens 30th September 2017
