Margiela, the Hermès Years exhibition
at the MAD, 22nd March – 2nd September 2018

If the Margiela exhibition at the Palais Galliera left you gasping for more, now it’s time to get your fill – The MAD (Musée des Arts Décoratifs) is offering a comprehensive look back at the part of Martin Margiela‘s career spent at Hermès, with an exhibition devised by the man himself.

Here’s all the info.

From 1997 to 2003, Belgian designer Martin Margiela was recruited to look after the women’s collections for Hermès, a rather surprising collaboration where his avant-garde looks clashed spectacularly and brilliantly with the old school brand.

In twelve collections, Margiela deployed his sobriety where Hermès was used to colour, minimalism in the place of ostentatiousness. For the old school brand it was a veritable revolution, something designed to shake up their image and give it a more youthful touch. And it worked.

The exhibition presents, for the first time in France, 96 accessorised ensembles showing the designer’s constructed-deconstructed looks, the recycled materials used, the oversize creations…

To delve even deeper into the subject, you can go on a guided visit of the exhibition, there are writing workshops for adults and four different workshops for kids, and a special (free) late night for 18-25 year-olds.

A catalogue of the exhibition is also available (280 pages, 52€, only at the museum’s gift store, called 107Rivoli).
