The incredible creativity of Venice of the early 18th century – not just musc and opera, but also visual and decorative arts – is the subject of a new exhibition Magnificent Venice! Europe and the Arts in the 18th Century at the Grand Palais.

Although well known now as an exceptional city, back in the 18th century Venice was just starting its vertiginous ascent. This beautiful metropole hosted incredibly parties, a renowned carnival and was hoe to artists such as Canaletto, Vivaldi and Farinelli.

The Grand Palais’ exhibition pays homage to this rich period of creation which has left us with exceptional paintings, ungorgettable music, memorable plays…

You will also leanr more about the city’s links with England, Paris and German-speaking countries, all of which contributed to the artistic scene of the era.

The design of the exhibition has been created by Macha Makeïeff, of the La Criée Theatre in Marseille, and she is also behind the “éclats nocturnes” which will be happening every Wednesday evening from 7-10pm (except 26th September, 26th December and 2nd January), as well as during the day for 12th/13th January 2019.

Be prepared for little themed pieces of theatre, music or dance lasting between 3 and 12 minutes at different points through the exhibition.

And there’s a lot more on offer:

– free entry from 8pm-midnight for the Nuit Blanche on 6th October

– a concert from Leonardo García Alarcón on 29th November at 8.30pm in the Salon d’honneur

– a conference (at the Louvre at 10am on 12th December, or 3pm on the 13th December at the Italian Cultural Instititue) about the ‘diaspora’ of Venitian artists and artistic exchanges in 18th century Europe

– guided visites (including some in sign language or audiodescription for vision-impaired visitors), workshops…

The new, free Grand Palais app is available with some comments (in French) during the visit of the exhibition. It also allows you to scan nine paintings to access related videos.

The paid audioguide (2.29€) is available in English, and a catalogue of the exhibition has just been published (256 pages, 300 illustrations, 45€ here at amazon.fr).
