Yves Saint Laurent: Dreams of the Orient exhibition at the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, 2nd October 2018 – 21st January 2019
For their first themed temporary exhibition since opening a year ago, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum presents Yves Saint Laurent: Dreams of the Orient with over fifty haute couture dresses inspired by Japan, Chiina and India, on show with Asian works of art lent by private collectors and Paris’ prestigious Guimet Museum.
With many of his voyages being ‘immobile’ or ‘imaginary’, Yves Saint Laurent was very much inspired by Asia, a continent he mostly knew from books, films and works of art.
These influences were evident in his collections from the very beginning, extending even to his perfumes (including the famous / scandalous ‘Opium’). The entire 1977 collection had a Chinese theme. Later, Saint Laurent toyed with variations on the kimono.
Country by country, the exhibition shows the designer’s inspirations and the sumptuous dresses he created. These are shown together with other workd of art, such as an ancient vase for China, 18th century clothing for India, lacquered tea boxes for Japan…
Linked with the exhibition are a number of events:
– a talk by Kenzo, who will be evoking Yves Saint Laurent and Japan (10th October at 7.30pm)
– a talk by Aurélie Samuel, head of the museum’s collections and the curator of the exhibition (7th November at 7.30pm)
– a visit of the restoration workshop to see some pieces specially taken out of storage to show the work done by the conservation teams (17th October at 6.30pm)
