The MEP (Maison Européenne de la Photographie) is proudly hosting the first major French exhibition about the work of JR, mixing photos, giant collages and installations.
You probably know of JR‘s work – images (many of them portraits) in black and white, enlarged to a surreal extent so they can cover the pyramid of the Louvre, entire buildings and even towns!
For the young artist (he’s only 35!) the exhibition Momentum, la mécanique de l’épreuve is important for cementing his prestige, covering his entire body of work from the early photos and graffit to his more famous projects, such as Women are heroes. The exhibition also presents a brand new ‘interactive fresco’ about the impossible task of gun control in the USA.
A selection of films will also show the artist’s modern dance projects and movies about his various interventions around the world, including the full-length documentary he co-directed with (French national treasure) Agnès Varda.
If you want to understand the hidden part of JR’s work, the exhibition is essential – it’s estimated that only 2% of his work is visible in galleries or museums, the rest being the process of creation with his collaborators or in his studio.
While visiting Paris, you may also see some JR prints hanging in metro or RER stations. In partnership with the RATP (the company that runs the underground system), large-format eyes are to be found near our hotels at Saint-Michel, Bir-Hakeim and Luxembourg.
JR has named the event Voyager avec d’autres (Travelling with others), it’s happening in eleven stations in all, and JR will be going back to them over the weeks to take photos of the people looking at the photos, and these new shots will then be added to the ones already in place.
Linked with the exhibition, you can buy a numbered, limited edition box set made by Wombat that includes a large photo and a fold-out fresco measuring nearly two metres. The box set costs 55€ and will be released in December.
And for those with decent French, JR himself has recorded a three-part audioguide that you can listen to below or during the exhibition!
Oh, and tof course here’s also a catalogue available (264 pages, 64€, here at amazon.fr).
