In 1983, the stairs between the second and third floor of the Eiffel Tower were removed and replaced with lifts. These stairs were sliced into 24 sections measuring between 2 and 9 metres high, and were sold off. Pieces of the staircase can be found fairly frequently up for auction.
For example, two pieces belonging to French singer-songwriter Guy Béart, were auctioned off just three years ago in 2015 following his death.
For the auction that took place this week, the section measured 4.3m (25 steps) and was estimated to be worth 40-60,000€. In the end, it sold for 169,000€, which is quite a surprise!
The buyer is an individual from the Middle East.
