New free late-night opening at the Louvre every first Saturday of the month

The world’ biggest museum (a twenty-odd minute walk from our hotels) is stopping its free Sunday opening which used to be on the first Sunday of every month, replacing it with a new free late night on the first Saturday of each month, starting 5th January 2019.

From 6-9.45pm every first Saturday of the month, entrance is now free for all, and while the museum says this is to encourage French families and first-time visitors, the underlying reason may also be that free Sunday opening was being over-exploited by certain tour agencies.

Special events are being organised for the Saturday night openings, particularly in the Richelieu wing, for which advanced booking is now obligatory (but free) on the museum’s Facebook page.

On offer for 5th January 2019 are a board game and reading area in the Marly courtyard, music from the Orchestre de Paris’ horns section in the Puget courtyard, a discovery trail for the Khorsabad courtyard using just torches, and more.

The Louvre is now free every first Saturday of the month from 6-9.45pm

Rooms start closing around 9.15pm
