The Maison Européenne de la Photographie has just opened its three springtime exhibitions – Love, Ren Hang by Ren Hang, Incandescence by Yoonkyung Jang and (take a deep breath) Busy living everything with everyone, everywhere, all of the time by the gloriously whimsical Coco Capitán.
Chinese artist Ren Hang, who died in 2017, had barely ten years to express his passion for photography before throwing himself out of a window age 29.
The MEP is showing 150 photos – the first time they’ve been seen in France – by the gay artist particularly loved by Chinese youth, and whose style has been called subversive and pornographic (unsurprisingly, under a politically repressive regime).
Young Korean artist Yoonkyung Jang won the 2018 Dior Photography Prize for Young Talents. Her entire ‘Glimpse of us’ series is being shown – portraits of women and a very personal vision of beauty.
And for the young Sevillian photographer Coco Capitán this is her first major exhibition in France, showcasing her sens of humour, derision and taste for the absurd.
With over 150 photos, you’ll see her work for luxury fashion brands, American landscapes, slightly surreal texts and even a few saucy shots…
It’s an impressive body of work considering that Coco is only 26 years old, and you can take it home with you by purchasing the catalogue of the exhibition (172 pages, 124 images, £35 here from the publisher).
Around the exhibitions there are guided visits, workshops and a selection of films made by the multitalented photographers themselves. More info here.
