A new extension to the Paris metro system

It’s not every day that our esteemed metro system gets an update, but from 4pm today, after seven years of work, line 14 will have four new stations, making journeys north (like getting to the flea market) more simple, and lessening the stress on other lines.

But that’s just the beginning of what’s in store for Paris’ underground system…

If you live in or pass through a big city, you’ll know that the state of public transport can radically change your day for the better or worse.

In Paris, we are pretty lucky – we have a vast network of underground and overground trains, plus buses and trams, all of which work well. They also receive quite a lot of investment, including one metro line that was fully automated around eight years ago (line 1), and another (line 4) that is currently being worked on for full automation in 2022, making them both quicker and more reliable.

However, line extensions are a lot rarer, so it’s with a certain amount of excitement that Parisians are welcoming the new stretch of line 14 in the north of the city (and neighbouring suburbs), especially as this line is also completely automatic, being the fastest and most recent of the entire network. It’s also – and this is rare for Paris, unfortunately – completely accessible to people in wheelchairs.

Now, with four new stations, almost 6km of new tracks and brand new trains, it takes just 15 minutes to get from the end of the line in Saint-Ouen to Châtelet in the centre, something that would have been thought impossible just a few years ago!

Not only will this line make getting to the north of the city much simpler (with a train every 85 seconds at peak times), it will also take pressure of some of the other lines in the network, making everyone’s journey a little better.

Also, with the 2024 Olympic Games around the corner, line 14 is being extended south as well, all the way to Orly airport, making it super simple to fly into Paris and take the metro to our hotels!

In the coming years, three other line extensions are due to be inaugurated (for lines 4, 11 and 12), and the huge Grand Paris Express network will be opened in stages over the newt decade, radically changing travel in the Paris area.

Paris is becoming a city where taking public transport is a pleasure, something that everyone benefits from. It’s yet another reason we think it’s the best city in the world!
