Chagall, Modigliani, Soutine… exhibition at the Museum of art and history of Judaism, 17th June – 31st October 2021

The Museum of art and history of Judaism in the Marais has opened a new exhibition focusing on the School of Paris, a collection of artists – many of whom were not French – who made Paris the centre of the artistic world between 1900 and 1960.

At the beginning of the 20th century many foreign artists, many of whom were Jewish, came to Paris to be inspired by its creative, avant-garde spirit. They quickly discovered, however, that it was difficult for their work to be accepted for the major art fairs, an essential step in building their reputations and financial stability.

The School of Paris, very present in the Montparnasse area of the city (not far from our hotels) was born from this art world xenophobia, with artist members who would become famous, like Modigliani, Zadkine and Chagall, and many more whose names are now less well-known.

With over 130 pieces on show, Chagall, Modigliani, Soutine… Paris as a School, 1905-1940 puts the spotlight on the generation of Jewish artists who arrived in Paris between 1900 and 1914, exploring the rise of antisemitism seen during the 1920s and showing the artists’ desire to not be limited to just the Jewish spheres, but instead earn a certain respect through their art.

A fascinating subject…
