Damien Hirst Cherry Blossoms exhibition at the Cartier Foundation, 6th July 2021 – 2nd January 2022

The Cartier Foundation, close to our hotels, has opened its latest temporary exhibition by one of the enfants terribles of modern art – Damien Hirst, known for his dead animals in formaldehyde, diamond-encrusted skulls worth £50M, dot paintings made by a factory of employees rather than the artist himself, and his new companion who is 27 years old (he is 56). 😳

Cherry Blossoms is a brand series by the artists, create for the exhibition, and a way for him to “mov[e] away from Minimalism and the idea of an imaginary mechanical painter”.

It’s springtime in Paris once again, or at least at the Cartier Foundation. Damien Hirst has created a brand new large-format series called Cherry Blossoms for the exhibition, and the results are colourful even for him!

It apparently took three full years to complete the series in his London workshop, with single paintings, a fallu trois ans pour terminer la série dans son atelier londonien, avec des panneaux simples, mais aussi des diptychs, triptychs, tetraptychs (four paintings) and even one hexaptych (six paintings), all extremely large.

Thirty paintings from the 107 created are on show.

To explore Hirst’s world further, the Cartier Foundation has made several films about the artist, including a medium-length one filmed in his workshop over a number of months. There’s also a 360° film that allows you to look around another of Hirst’s workshops. All the films are available on the exhibition website .

A complete catalogue of the works in the series is available in French (330 pages, 250 colour reproductions, 72€ here at amazon.fr), but English-speakers will probably prefer the English version, as it’s a lot less expensive – £42 – here at hive.co.uk. #supportyourlocalbookstore

The video playlist below gives a quick look at the exhibition, the catalogue, the films on offer and the special evening events being organised…

Make sure you get down there and take a look. No hurry – the exhibition runs for six months!
