The blue hour of Peder Severin Krøyer at the Marmottan Museum until 26th September 2021

There’s only a small chance you know about Danish painter Peder Severin Krøyer, who died in 1909 and is considered one of the grand masters of Danish painting.

So now’s the time to catch up, with the first ever exhibition in France to focus exclusively on his work.

While his peers (like Hammershøi) were mostly busy painting interiors, Krøyer loved landscapes, the sea and that special time of day – the blue hour – just before sundown. In this sense, his work has parallels with the work of Spanish painter Sorolla, who was active during the same period.

Thanks to loans from museums in Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Budapest, Paris and most of all Skagen (which holds the world’s largest collection of of Krøyer paintings), over sixty beautiful masterpieces can be seen at the Marmottan Museum until September 2021.

This is a rare chance to discover the light and sensitivity of a painter who deserves to be better known in central Europe.

To help you during your visit, an audioguide in English can be rented for 3 euros, and if you’d like to peruse the paintings in the comfort of your own home, a gorgeous catalogue for the exhibition has just been published (224 pages, 140 illustrations, 25€ here at amazon.fr).
